“The Live Concert Experience”

Special Issue of Rock Music Studies, Fall 2015

Rock Music Studies is a new popular music journal to be launched by Taylor & Francis in 2014, under the co-editorship of Gary Burns and Thomas Kitts. Contributions are invited to a special issue of the journal, to be published in Volume 2.3, 2015, on “The Live Concert Experience.” The special issue will be co-edited by Nick Baxter-Moore and Tom Kitts.

It is well established that the live music sector – concerts, tours, associated merchandising – is now where the money is in the music business. But what do fans expect from the live concert experience? How do they rate that experience? Why are they willing to pay so much money to hear artists and music that they can otherwise consume for nothing? And what keeps them coming back for more?

Contributions are invited from popular music scholars conducting research on any and all aspects of the live concert experience. Potential topics may include:

•	The live concert as communal experience – the gathering of the fans
•	The live concert as mystical, spiritual or transcendent experience
•	The live concert as ritual
•	The live concert as affirmation of taste
•	The live concert as performance – by artists and fans alike
•	The economics of live performance – touring in the new political economy of the music business
•	Evaluating the live concert experience – what criteria do fans use to assess the experience, to compare concerts, etc?
•	Recording/reliving the concert experience: live albums, concert DVDs, bootlegs and YouTube videos
•	Television and live concerts 
•	DJ performances as concerts
•	Technology and liveness – mediation and authenticity
•	Live and not-so-live – lip-synching in live concerts 
•	Simulating the live experience – tribute acts and “classic albums live” 
•	Live performance venues 
•	Light shows and other visual accompaniment. 

Abstracts should be submitted by May 15, 2014.
Completed manuscripts are due by December 15, 2014.
