Workshop Description:

Deleuze & Guattari are well known for eschewing questions of ‘what is’ – the classical format of philosophical inquiries – in favour of investigations into ‘how it works’. Despite the apparent abandonment of this preference in their last collaboration, What Is Philosophy?, Deleuze & Guattari’s response to this question consists in mapping out a geography of thinking – a topology of relational elements, both internal and external to the discipline, the interactions of which constitute the activity or operation of philosophy and distinguish it from other endeavours that ‘work’ in different ways.

In this workshop we will explore this terrain of thought as described by Deleuze & Guattari, its methods of movement and modes of manifestation. Areas to be addressed will include the nonlinear dynamics of thought, the status of propositions in philosophy, the mechanics of assemblages, mobile concepts, the conception of concepts, the image of thought, and related themes on the migrations of thought.

Confirmed speakers:

Prof Jeffrey A Bell (History and Political Science, Southeastern Louisiana University)
Prof Paul Patton (Philosophy, University of New South Wales)
Prof Ian Buchanan (Institute for Social Transformation Research, University of Wollongong)
Associate Prof David R Cole (English, Literacies and ESL, University of Western Sydney)
