‘Software piracy, digital literacy, and social inclusion: A case study of a Venezuelan cybercafé’

This talk examines the situated development and sharing of new, dynamic literacies, through an ethnographic account of digital gameplay in a cybercafé in Caracas, Venezuela.

In Cybercafé Avila, social inclusion through use of digital game platforms and software and inclusion in digital game culture, was underpinned by a reliance on an ‘unofficial’ knowledge of software piracy.

Through the pursuit of playing digital games, shared literacies emerged – which, while focused on how to most effectively play digital games, also included the mastery of techniques that made playing the games a possibility.

Dr. Tom Apperley is an ethnographer that specializes in researching digital media technologies. His previous writing has covered broadband policy, digital games, digital literacies and pedagogies, mobile media, and social inclusion. His book, Gaming Rhythms: Play and Counterplay from the Situated to the Global, was published by The Institute of Network Cultures in 2010.

Dr. Brigid Costello, UNSW, will be the discussant for this talk.
