New Zealand Journal of Media Studies call for papers:

#EQNZ: Media and the Canterbury Earthquakes

Editors: Zita Joyce (University of Canterbury) and Luke Goode (University of Auckland)

Date for Abstract submissions 31 August 2013

The Christchurch and Canterbury Earthquakes of 2010 and 2011 continue to resonate across the nation’s economy, society, and politics. This special issue of the New Zealand Journal of Media Studies is dedicated to exploring the mediation of the earthquakes in local, international, and social media.

We welcome contributions on all aspects of media and the Canterbury earthquakes, including analyses of content, journalists, media organisations, audiences, and the use of online and social networked media by individuals and organisations.

We welcome contributions from within New Zealand and from overseas, including comparative analyses that draw out new understandings of the New Zealand media in relation to others, analysis of coverage in other countries, and discussions of disaster and media elsewhere that can inform comparative perspectives.

As the issue will be published three years after the February quake, a major focus could be on media developments since the September 2010 quake, and coverage of the ‘rebuild’ and its repercussions.

Abstracts of no more than 250 words should be submitted to Zita Joyce (zita.joyce at canterbury.ac.nz) by Saturday 31 August 2013
On the basis of these short abstracts, invitations to submit full papers (of no more than 6000 words) will be sent out in early September
Full papers will be due by December 1 for peer review.

Images, video, audio clips and links to media examples are encouraged.

Intended publication is February 2014
