Abstract
Whether we are at work, home, school, in transit, or at play, our daily activities involve interacting with countless stimuli, signals and interfaces. To help us digest and migrate swiftly through them, the use of icons and symbols is evolving rapidly as a key language and lexicon of our urban digital age. Let's take a fierce and fun look at them, their strengths and weaknesses, and predictions for the future.

About Patrick
Trained as a technical writer but specialising in visual information design, Patrick Hofmann is often ironically referred to as 'a man of few words'. For twenty years, this vibrant Canadian has helped companies worldwide improve the usability of their products – usually by transforming their textual information into pictograms, maps, symbols and icons.
His award-winning work and undying passion for visual language sent him across the globe, as he teaches companies how to use pictures to improve communication.
Currently, Patrick works at Google in Sydney as a Senior User Experience Designer on Google Maps.
