Seminar Series 2013 at the School of the Arts and Media, UNSW
‘Staging Biography: Actors Playing Real People’

Despite the prevalence of roles portraying real people (dead or alive), dominant acting theory is predicated on assumptions that 'character' is entirely composed from the actor's imagination. But actors talk of feeling imaginatively constricted when they play a real person. They also talk of ethical dilemmas which present themselves. Is resemblance important? Can 'likeness' become a fetish? How does an iconic actor negotiate his or her own brand of celebrity with playing a celebrity?

Mary Luckhurst is Chair of Theatre and a founder of the new Department of Theatre, Film and Televsion at the University of York (UK). She is the author of numerous books and articles examining the processes of theatre-making, and is also a director and playwright. She was recently named one of ten International Scholars of distinction by the Higher Education Academy in the UK.
