Gambling Addictions: Sovereignty, Well‐Being and Activism
When: Friday November 2nd 2012, 10am‐5:00pm
Where: B Block, Room 304, Kelvin Grove Campus, QUT
Cost: $100.00 Inc GST
This reading group explores the role of legal gambling industries in former white settler colonial nations. For some
Indigenous communities in the US and Canada, land‐based and online casinos have provided the economic
foundation for strengthened self‐governance, improved health, employment and education indicators as well as
language and cultural revival. In Australia public awareness of Indigenous gambling has been primarily been
framed by concerns about the prevalence of ‘problem gambling’ on card games and Electronic Gaming Machines.
Scholars in New Zealand have developed a public health approach to social impacts rather than focusing narrowly
on individual pathologies of gambling. In this comparative context we will guide participants through a discussion
of some of the many questions regulated gambling poses for Indigenous sovereignty, well‐being and activism.
Facilitators are: Dr Fiona Nicoll, Lecture, School of English, Media Studies and Art History, The University of
Queensland, Dr Trish Luker, Postdoctoral Fellow, University of Technology, Sydney and Dr David Singh, Research
