Transforming Cultures<http://www.transforming.cultures.uts.edu.au/> is pleased to announce the 2012 Annual Lecture given by the centre's Distinguished Visiting Scholar: Professor Frieda Ekotto, University of Michigan Imagining Europe without African Migrant Workers
When I open my door, I must be ready to take the greatest risks Jacques Derrida
Abstract: My presentation will concentrate on genealogies of violence in the crossing of borders, a crossing that often produces trauma, chaos, loss and death. It is possible to examine the devastating impact of migration on the physical and psychic lives of the people in Sub-Saharan Africa, and we must confront the disturbing ways in which violence and oppression are repeated in the cultural imaginary despite the efforts of black subjects to speak out against that violence.
Very little has really changed: in continuous waves of immigration, African bodies die in the sea in search of better economic opportunities. First, I suggest we must better understand the borders that these subjects cross and second, it is important to examine the ways in which filmmakers (Ousmane Sembène’s film The Black Girl (1968) and Eléonore Yameogo’s Paris my Paradise (2011) have produced images that have shaped the current conception of immigration as hospitality fail to describe adequately or to synchronize the contact between immigrants and host societies.
