The Deakin University Philosophy Seminar Series, with the support
of the Alfred Deakin Research Institute, the Centre for Citizenship and
Globalization and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, is proud
to present:

ERIN MANNING, "ARTFULNESS"

ABSTRACT: Through a
development of the concepts of the art of time and the art of
participation, this paper explores the relationship of intuition and
sympathy in Bergson's work to ask how a concept of artfulness might be
conceived. Artfulness is here defined as the force of the event of art,
a force that is more than human.

BIO: Erin Manning holds a University
Research Chair in Relational Art and Philosophy in the Faculty of Fine
Arts at Concordia University (Montreal, Canada). She is also the
director of the Sense Lab ( http://www.senselab.ca [1] ), a laboratory
that explores the intersections between art practice and philosophy
through the matrix of the sensing body in movement. In her art practice
she works between painting, dance, fabric and sculpture (
http://www.erinmovement.com [2]). Current iterations of her artwork
explore emergent collectivities through participatory textiles. Her
project Stitching Time will be presented at the 2012 Sydney Biennale and
The Knots of Time will open the new Flax Museum in Kortrijk, Belgium in
2014. Her writing addresses movement, art, experience and the political
through the prism of process philosophy, with recent work developing a
notion of autistic perception and the more-than human. Publications
include _Relationscapes: Movement, Art, Philosophy_ (Cambridge, Mass.:
MIT Press, 2009), _Politics of Touch: Sense, Movement, Sovereignty_
(Minneapolis: Minnesota University Press, 2007) and _Ephemeral
Territories: Representing Nation, Home and Identity in Canada_
(Minneapolis: Minnesota University Press, 2003). Her forthcoming
manuscript, _Always More Than One: Individuation's Dance_ will be
published by Duke University Press in 2012 as will her forthcoming
co-written manuscript (with Brian Massumi), _Thought in the Act:
Passages in the Ecology of Experience_ (Minnesota UP).

Where: Deakin
University, Burwood Campus, room C2.05. A map of the campus can be found
here: http://www.deakin.edu.au/campuses/InteractiveMapBurwood.php [3]

When: Tuesday, August 7, 3.30-5.00pm

Videolink: The seminar will be
linked to the following videoconference rooms: Geelong kc1.011 and
Warrnambool A.3.41

All welcome.

Please also note that Erin Manning
is participating in Entertaining the environment, at Phoenix Gallery,
Deakin University Burwood campus 6th-17th of August (opening 5pm
Thursday 9th). This exhibition, featuring artists Kent Wilson, Erin
Manning, Riki-Metisse Marlow, Laura Woodward & Andrew Goodman, asks
artists to respond to Erin Manning's proposition that an art event might
work to place us immediately in a relational framework rather than
investing in the hierarchy of subject and object, and explores
strategies for the misuse of technologies in seeking to engage a wider
range of environmental forces.
