DATE: Tuesday, 7 August

TIME: 2:00 - 4:00pm
PLACE: Room 3.G.27
University of Western Sydney, Bankstown
Everyone welcome.

"Spinoza's Authority," A. Kiarina Kordela

In these two seminars we shall focus on excerpts from Spinoza's Theologico-Political Treatise in order to approach his conceptualization of political power as a system that negotiates authority and freedom. We shall see how this intertwining of authority and freedom both anticipates more contemporary conceptualizations of political power, such as (Gramsci's) hegemony and (Foucault's) biopolitics, and critiques them.

REQUIRED READING:
Spinoza, Theologico-Political Treatise, Preface and chapters IV, XIV, XVI, and XX.
Please read the text before the first seminar.
The readings can be made available upon request.
