New Zealand Journal of Media Studies – Special Issue Proposal CFP
 Title
Aotearoa 2011: Politics, Capital, Culture
Publication Date
November 2012: Volume 13, No. 2.
 Special Issue Editors
Brett Nicholls & Vijay Devadas, Department of Media, Film & Communication, University of Otago
Theme
2011 in New Zealand was marked by a number of important events that require further scrutiny. It was a year in which New Zealand feverishly worked to refine and strengthen its global image, reelected a national party government, and coped with an on-going natural disaster. This special issue of NZJMS seeks to situate these events in broader social and cultural contexts. It seeks to engage with the epistemic power-politics of modern public life in 2011, drawing attention to the role of the media in articulating these events.
The special issue invites contributions that critically engage with the events, texts, and/or practices associated with one or more of the following: the Christchurch earthquake disaster, Rugby World Cup, and NZ election.
The special issue seeks to engage with the following questions: How were these events constructed in the media? What does this construction tell us about the NZ state and other institutions in relation to Aotearoa’s peoples? What do these events and their media constructions tell us about power, knowledge, subjugation, and subject formation? How do they relate to the biopolitical operations of the state? How do they engender or close down politics? What is the relationship between these events and their construction to the operations of global capital?
Suggested topics under each heading include but are not limited to:
Rugby World Cup — the rugby hegemony in New Zealand, the construction of gender in New Zealand, rugby and corporate power, the world cup and the security state, the Real New Zealand festival, brand New Zealand.
Christchurch earthquake disaster — disaster capitalism, emergency laws, media reporting of the earthquake, Mayor Bob Parker's shifting popularity, the city without a city, social media and disaster reporting, the Tony Marryatt scandal, the student army, the role of social class in the recovery process.
New Zealand Politics — the "teagate" event, media representations of John Key and other leaders, John Key as radio DJ, the election night coverage, inequality in New Zealand, the New Zealand left, the coverage of New Zealand's credit rating downgrade, the coverage of oppositions to status-quo polices, occupations, protests and social movements in and through new media.
The special issue editors invite contributors to submit abstracts of 300-500 words that:
1. Outlines the purpose and main questions of the paper
2. Describes the way taken for answering the posed questions
3. Articulates the relevance of the topic in relation to one or more of the main headings and/or the theme of the special issue.
