The Centre for Cultural Research, University of Western Sydney invites you to attend a public presentation by

PROFESSOR JAMES CURRAN (Goldsmiths, University of London)

‘The Internet: Prophecy and Reality’

This public presentation will examine what experts have said would happen as a result of the internet, and what has actually happened. While the internet has effected some significant changes, the transformations that were predicted have not occurred. The internet has not, as confidently claimed by many commentators:

·         provided a geyser of prosperity;

·         promoted global understanding;

·         empowered the powerless;

· caused the fall of dictatorships, or

· generated a renaissance of journalism.
Indeed many forecasts have been unfulfilled. Why, then, has internet prophecy so often departed from internet reality, and can it now be legitimately described as another ‘God that failed’?

James Curran is the Director of the Goldsmiths Leverhulme Media Research Centre and Professor of Communications at Goldsmiths, University of London. He is author and editor (solely and collaboratively) of over 20 books about the media, including the recent works Media and Democracy (Routledge, 2011); How Media Inform Democracy (edited with Toril Aalberg, Routledge, 2011); Power Without Responsibility (with Jean Seaton, 7th edition, Routledge, 2010), and the forthcoming Misunderstanding the Internet (with Des Freedman and Natalie Fenton, Routledge, 2012).
