"Creativity, Globalisation and Chinese Cities Workshop" supported by the Institute for Creative and Digital Cultures, University of Nottingham Ningbo, China - Shanghai, 17 September, 2011

Alongside China's rapid urbanisation there has been a surge of creative endeavours and academic interest in visual cultures and products related to this. One of the main sources of attraction is the increased inter-cultural (international and intra-national) nature of the creative visual cultures as they emerge in new and old art spaces, communities, cinemas, galleries, streets, online, and the like. The aim of this workshop is to foster future cooperative research into urban creative visual cultures, and to build connections between postgraduates and early career researchers across borders and regions. A key outcome of the workshop will be the beginnings of a network of emerging scholars that can publish, apply for grants, and assist local developments.

Intended outcomes include future grant applications, publishing opportunities, new creative research methods, professional development, as well as the fostering of social and creative capital.

The workshop is free.

We will pay for 4 inter-Asia airfares, and accommodation in Shanghai for one night.

All participants will be asked to present a 20 minute paper which references Chinese cities, creativity and visual cultures. Of course, this can include work on relationships between Chinese cities and creativity and visual cultures in other parts of the world.

Each paper will subsequently be prepared for publication in Altitude: An e-journal of emerging humanities work. Submission guidelines for Altitude can be found here: http://www.thealtitudejournal.com The journal is listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals, maintained by Lund University Libraries. If you need extra assistance to publish in English this will be arranged.

A total of 8 PhD and ECR researchers (4 international and 4 local) will be selected to take part in this workshop, to be held in Shanghai on 17 September, 2011. Applications will be reviewed by a panel comprised of representatives of the Institute for Creative and Digital Cultures and Altitude: An e-journal of emerging humanities work.

We are seeking proposals consisting of a biography (500 characters), a statement on current research/description(1000 characters), and an abstract for a paper presentation (1500 characters).

About the Institute: The Institute for Creative and Digital Cultures is inter-disciplinary in nature, encouraging collaboration within and without the university on the following broad themes: creativity, transnational cinema, affective lives and visual cultures, the Chinese media, and digital cultures.

All applications should be sent to Dr Clifton Evers: clifton.evers at nottingham.edu.cn
