  Hi Everybody,
I have just received an email from Graeme Turner which sheds light on the 'journal quality profile' issue. Graeme also explains that he has emailed me personally because he can't, for some reason, email the List. Graeme has given me permission to post this.

Subject: journal ranking

Hi Jon

For some reason I can't post to the CSAA list, but fyi here is how I think this will work. Instead of a ranked journal list from which information is drawn to tell you the percentage of publications in A or A* journals etc, there will be a list of journals in which those in the unit of evaluation have published. These will be listed in descending order, so that the journal in which the most publications have appeared will be at the top, and so on down the list. There will be information about the journal (editorial boards, acceptance rates etc), but the REC (the assessment panel) will also expect to have expert advice in the room from the relevant discipline to advise on the standing or quality of the journals in their discipline. So, if a unit of evaluation has published most of its work through Continuum, say, they should be seen as having published the majority of their work in a journal of high standing. The value of this is that it recognises that journal quality shifts, that journal quality is not absolute, and that the ranking system produced so many anomalies that it was not worth renovating. This is a major improvement, in my view. It does allow for a much more nuanced interpretation of the performance of each unit of evaluation than was possible before.

Cheers

Graeme
