THE DOUBLE BIND OF MODERN SEX: SHORTBUS AND THE MODERNIZATION OF ORGASM
Professor Annamarie Jagose, University of Sydney
With greater and greater precision, scholars from a range of disciplines
have determined, across the tripwires of periodization, the historically
specific pressures and shifts that mark the emergence of the modern system
of sexuality. Across this archive, it is worth remarking on the emergence of
two figures that are differently indexical to the new conditions of erotic
possibility attendant on intensified personalizing relations and increased
opportunities for impersonal transactions or encounters: the straight woman
and the gay man. Paying attention to this seeming odd couple allows a closer
consideration of what I am here calling the double bind of modern sex. After
tracing the production of these two key protagonists through Anthony Giddens
and Henning Bech¹s influential accounts of modern sexual lifeworlds, this
paper amplifies what is at stake in these discussions for our understanding
of modern orgasm via readings of John Cameron Mitchell¹s Shortbus (2006).
