The Prospect of Politeness: Soundproofing the Country Estate in
Eighteenth-Century Britain

Tues 5 April
Robert Webster Building 327 from 4.00pm to 5.30pm

During the eighteenth century, the English landscape garden was often
celebrated for actualising a new pictorial view of nature, being a kind of
real estate version of landscape painting. But it was not just prized for
its visible appearance. For, as this paper argues, this supreme example of
politeness was also feted as a means by which the country estate could be
quarantined from the noise of rural social activity.

Peter Denney is a Lecturer in History at Griffith University. He gained his
PhD from the University of York and is currently completing a book entitled
³Silencing the Poor: Soundscape, Landscape and Society in Britain,
1700-1830².

ALL WELCOME!!
