Introduction
When disability is represented solely in the body of the disabled person without consideration of its circumscription in social, cultural and political meanings and institutions, the consequence is "that there is neither social responsibility for the lack of access to social services, nor for the ways in which bodily and intellectual perfection are defined" (McDougall, 2006: 393). Disability is a vital area of media, democracy and change across the world-yet the dynamic, rich and contested transformations in this area remain relatively unnoticed, illegible, under-studied, and undebated.

Nations around the world are grappling with the new UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which puts an unprecedented and comprehensive emphasis on communication, media and information technology access, participation, and representation regarding disability. New Zealand has for some years led the way on disability and democracy, with Australia over the past two years taking important measures to adopt a human rights approach. Media and communication are vitally important to such processes of change. Disability is fast becoming a fascinating area of innovation here. Distinctive cultures of use and engagement with digital media, and new kinds of formats, programs and modes of representation, are burgeoning across traditional and convergent media.

Scope and theme
Accordingly, under the general rubric of this year's ANZCA 2010 theme, we welcome all manner of papers and presentations in traditional, innovative, and non-traditional areas of research pertaining to issues, perspectives, concepts, themes, policies and provocations about how disability is implicated in, shaping and shaped by, the dynamics of media and change. To further open and extend discussion about media, democracy and change as issues of recognition, power, belonging, citizenship and culture, the stream also welcomes submissions that explore the ways disability and media intersect with categories of identity such as gender, sexuality, class, age, race and ethnicity.

About ANZCA 2010
The Australian and New Zealand Communication Association (ANZCA) is a professional association for teachers and researchers in the diverse disciplines of communication.

ANZCA's 2010 conference will be held in Canberra from 7-9 July 2010 in collaboration with the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House. The Museum, in this grand old setting, houses a range of innovative exhibitions that explore themes of Australian democracy, making it an ideal venue for discussion and debate about issues around themes of Media, Democracy & Change.

In a time of rapid organisational and technological change in the media and communication industries, the democratic functions of the media are under challenge. The role of public communicators has never been more central yet problematic, whether it takes place in organisational, political, creative, global or journalism settings.

The Disability & Communication stream of ANZCA endeavours to provide a place for communication, media, cultural, journalism, public relations, marketing and disability studies researchers to present, discuss and debate work at the intersection of disability and communication. In 2010 the stream is jointly convened by Professor Gerard Goggin (University of New South Wales) and Dr Cassandra Loeser (University of South Australia).
