What Do Canadians Do With Broadband Networks: Applying Insights from the
Canadian Internet Use Survey to the NBN

When: 3pm, Thursday 26th November
Where: Brown Theatre, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering,
University of Melbourne

Using data from Statistics Canada's Canadian Internet Use Survey, this
presentation will explore Canadians' patterns of Internet usage. Despite
being early adopters of broadband networks, it is argued that the majority
of Canadians are not particularly engaged with the Internet (based on
measures of intensity and scope of usage), nor do many of their current
online activities require higher speed broadband connectivity. The
presentation discusses these findings in the context of the Australian
National Broadband Network, offering reflection on what may be needed to
encourage demand for the 100 megabit/s connectivity that the NBN will offer.
