CALL FOR PAPERS
THE INDIAN OCEAN AND SOUTH ASIA RESEARCH NETWORK AT THE UNIVERSITY OF
TECHNOLOGY, SYDNEY WILL HOST A CONFERENCE IN MARCH 2010 ON
SUSTAINABILITY IN THE INDIAN OCEAN REGION.

PLEASE SEND A TITLE AND AN ABSTRACT TO CORNELIA BETZLER (Cornelia.Betzler at uts.edu.au
)

Advancing a sustainable future:
strategies for cross-disciplinary practice across the Indian Ocean

How do we conceptualise sustainable futures across the Indian Ocean
region in ways that are both environmentally sensitive and socially
equitable? This conference will bring together academics and activists
working in a range of fields, including environmental engineering,
sustainable architecture, humanities, geography and the social
sciences, and environmental and intellectual property law to address
this question.

  Themes might include:

* Approaches and strategies for exploring human-environment
interactions over time and from an oceanic region perspective

* Urban design, planning and patterns of interaction between mega-
cities, towns and rural areas

* Infrastructure development for environmental and social sustainability

* The future of water: access, quality and control

* Differential regional impacts of climate change

* Natural hazards, disasters, and humanitarian relief efforts

* Legal, political, and governance issues of sustainability across
scales, ranging from local communities to transnational regional
cooperation

The envisaged format includes a plenary speaker for major themes,
followed by an interactive workshop with presentations by participants
and cross-disciplinary sessions aimed at sharing research strategies
and skills. Given the complex nature of sustainability issues and
their impacts, this conference aims to open up a space for vital
conversations across disciplines and broad areas of activism
andresearch.
