Koichi Iwabuchi
Globalisation, East Asian media cultures and their publics
Abstract: In the last two decades, media cultural production and regional
media co-production, circulation and consumption in East Asia have been
extensively developed. This paper will critically revisit the rise of East
Asian media culture production and connection in terms of de-Westernisation,
de-Asianisation and de-nationalisation, and reconsider the significance of
studying media cultures in East Asia now.
About the presenter:
Koichi Iwabuchi is Professor of Media and Cultural Studies at the School of
International Liberal Studies, Waseda University. He has been working on
cultural globalization and transnationalism, East Asian media cultural
connections, multicultural questions and cultural citizenship, and cultural
policy issues. He is together with Chris Berry an editor of book series,
TransAsia: Screen Cultures (Hong Kong University Press). His publications
include Recentering Globalization: Popular Culture and Japanese
Transnationalism (Duke University Press 2002) and East Asian Pop Culture:
Analyzing the Korean Wave, co-edited with Chua Beng Huat (Hong Kong
University Press 2008). His new book, Undoing Cool Japan: Culture and
Dialogue in the age of brand nationalism (tentative title) will be
forthcoming from Paradigm Publishers in 2010.
