Call For Papers:

“Belief and Unbelief in a Post-secular Age”

The question of belief – its role, meaning, and, indeed, its very
possibility – is an important one for the present age. “We are constantly
trying to think the interconnectedness,” writes Derrida, “of knowledge and
faith, technoscience and religious belief, calculation and the
sacrosanct.” As Derrida suggests, belief today seems polarized between
two very different forms of experience or knowledge. This situation alone
places a demand on us to rethink both the nature of belief and its role in
contemporary life.

We invite papers addressing this topic for a one-day interdisciplinary
seminar at Murdoch
 University on Tuesday
July 17th. Perspectives from a range of disciplines such as literature,
philosophy, theology, media and cultural studies are welcome. Possible
topics include, but are not limited to:

·
“Fundamentalist” forms of religious
belief

·
Unbelief as a species of belief

·
The Dawkins debate and the rise of
atheism

·
The waning of conventional belief
systems (New Age spiritualities, weak thought, weak theology)

·
The legacy of Enlightenment
rationalism

·
Epistemological perspectives on
belief

·
Postmodernism as a crisis of belief;
postmodernism as its resurgence.

·
Politics, nationalism and religion
(for instance, the messianicism of Barack Obama)

·
Belief in texts—novels, films,
television, online.
