About the report:

The contribution of creative occupations to Australian healthcare was
examined using a mix of statistics and case studies. Creative occupations
were found to be making significant, growing and widespread contributions to
the development and delivery of healthcare goods and services, the initial
training and ongoing professionalism of doctors and nurses and the effective
functioning of healthcare buildings. Key functions that creative activities
addressed were information management and analysis and making complex
information comprehensible, assisting communication and reducing
psycho-social and distance-mediated barriers, and improving the efficiency
and effectiveness of services.

Janet Pagan's current research is into the contribution of Australia's
creative capability to healthcare services and products and to innovation in
healthcare. A particular focus is the opportunities offered by newer
technologies such as multimedia, 3D modelling and broadband. Janet Pagan
has been a senior policy adviser in the Commonwealth government where she
worked on several major policy developments in relation to innovation,
science and information and communication technology. She has a PhD in
biochemistry from the Australian National University.

Peter Higgs' is a Senior Research Fellow at the ARC Centre of Excellence for
Creative Industries and Innovation, Queensland University of Technology.
Currently managing the Creative Economy Mapping programme he has a
background as a business manager and marketer in the software, digital media
and computer industries.

Professor Stuart Cunningham is Director of the Australian Research Council
Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries and Innovation, Queensland
University of Technology. Known for his contributions to media,
communications and cultural studies, he works to promote their relevance to
industry practice and government policy. He is the author or editor of
several books and major reports, the most recent of which include The Media
and Communications in Australia (with Graeme Turner, 4th ed, 2006), What
Price a Creative Economy? (2006) and Beyond the creative industries: mapping
the creative economy in the United Kingdom (with Peter Higgs and Hasan
Bakhshi, NESTA, 2008). A collection of essays, In the Vernacular, is
published in September 2008.
