Selling National Art in the Auction Market

 

Even though art markets have been the subject of academic research from
a number of disciplines - including art history, anthropology and
sociology - economics, in particular, has been the main contributor to
this literature. This paper argues for the need to counteract a dominant
economic tradition and proposes an analytical framework which re-works
existing approaches to the sociology of art and to the study of
globalization in the arts. Focusing on empirical research on the art
market in Ireland and Scotland, it will argue for the need to revise two
key areas of sociological enquiry: the impact of globalization on the
art market, and the study of art value.

 

 

Dr Marta Herrero is Lecturer in Sociology of Culture and Cultural
Production, University of Plymouth. Her interests are in the sociology
of culture and the arts, art markets, economic sociology, globalization,
and social theory. In 2007 she published Irish Intellectuals and
Aesthetics: The Making of a Modern Art Collection (Dublin: Irish
Academic Press) and a co-edited book is forthcoming titled Art and
Aesthetics. Critical concepts in the social sciences (London:
Routledge). Marta is Vice-President of the Sociology of Art Research
Group, International Sociological Association and Member of the Social
Theory and Sociology of Art networks, European Sociological Association.
