Monday, 21st January. Dr Tebbutt is on leave until January 21 but will be

EXPRESSIONS OF INTERESTS are sought for a Research Assistant on an ARC
Discovery Project, ŒThe ABC in Asia and its role in cultural exchange
(1956-2006)¹.

THE POSITION requires someone with experience in archival document research
and data entry skills who can work independently. The duration is for three
months with the potential for extension over 6 or 12 months. A full-time
researcher is preferred but a fractional appointment may be possible. It is
desirable that you will have completed a PhD.

The position is based in Sydney with occasional work in Canberra. The Chief
Investigator will be based in Melbourne at La Trobe University's Media
Studies Program.

Remuneration is at Level B1: $67,876 pro rata, (for fractional or part-time)

The Research Assistant will:
- review ABC archival documents held at the National Archive of Australia
related to the organisation's operations in Asia
- produce reports with annotations on the documents including identifying
program material mentioned, key personnel and agreed descriptors
- liaise with ABC staff as necessary
- assist in preparing background material for oral history interviews
- a secondary task will be to review and report on documents held in other
archives, libraries and personal holdings

The ABC in Asia and its role in cultural exchange (1956-2006)
 
This research documents the history of the Australian Broadcasting
Commission/Corporation's relations with Asia between 1956 and 2006. In
analysing the impact of ABC reporting and educational activities in Asia
this ground breaking transnational research investigates the broadcaster's
role as representative of liberal-democratic Œpublic service¹ and a vehicle
for international communication in the context of global challenges to
public broadcasting institutions.
 
The project aims to:
- record and describe the breadth of technological and cultural exchange
with Asia through the Australian Broadcasting Commission/Corporation;
- assess the impact of this cross-cultural enterprise on ABC practices
including professional and educational broadcasting and technical training;
- analyse the policy shifts that shaped the ABC¹s goals in relation to its
international and national diasporic audiences;
- discuss how changes in institutional goals and aspirations affected values
espoused by the ABC as it worked, and continues to work, to construct a
regional zone of communication.
 
Areas of interest include: Establishing the ABC offices in Asia * Working
[conditions] in/with Asia (journalists and administrators) * Training for
Farm and Educational broadcasting * exemplar bureaus: Djkarta, Beijing * TV
and radio programs with significant Asia related content * Managing the
British Commonwealth Information and News Agency/Visnews * The impact of
satellite technology * The impact of internet and datacasting
