The ABC in Asia and its role in cultural exchange (1956-2006)
This research documents the history of the Australian Broadcasting
Commission/Corporation's relations with Asia between 1956 and 2006. In
analysing the impact of ABC reporting and educational activities in Asia
this ground breaking transnational research investigates the broadcaster's
role as representative of liberal-democratic public service¹ and a vehicle
for international communication in the context of global challenges to
public broadcasting institutions.
The project aims to:
- record and describe the breadth of technological and cultural exchange
with Asia through the Australian Broadcasting Commission/Corporation;
- assess the impact of this cross-cultural enterprise on ABC practices
including professional and educational broadcasting and technical training;
- analyse the policy shifts that shaped the ABC¹s goals in relation to its
international and national diasporic audiences;
- discuss how changes in institutional goals and aspirations affected values
espoused by the ABC as it worked, and continues to work, to construct a
regional zone of communication.
