Professor Meaghan Morris, from the Centre for Cultural Research at the University of Western Sydney, is presenting a lecture entitled:

The Company of Strangers: How hard can 'internationalizing' be?
Before joining UWS, I lived and worked full-time in Hong Kong teaching Cultural Studies for seven years. I have also lived for almost twenty-five years in Bundeena near Cronulla. Two days after the 2005 riot-shocking images of which seen around the world on TV-I attended a dinner in HK for the economist and critic of globalization, Joseph Stieglitz. Hearing my accent, a Chinese businessman leaned to say: "what do you think about Cronulla?" I answered by blaming various parties, but only later did it occur to me that I did not (and would not) ask this stranger his opinion of anti-Japanese rioting in the PRC.
This everyday kind of imbalance is often ignored in policy talk as universities seek to internationalize, and yet such history-ridden exchanges are the stuff of a sociability that makes 'internationalizing' possible. What kinds of problems do teachers and researchers working 'across boundaries' actually face? Reflecting on some of the little catastrophes I have seen in the Hong Kong context, I will outline the international research projects I hope to undertake in future years at the Centre for Cultural Research.
