Call for Registrations - In the Pipeline: New Directions in Cultural Research on Water <http://www.uq.edu.au/crn/pipeline/index.html>

19-20 July 2007

Centre for Cultural Research, Parramatta Campus, University of Western Sydney

How to respond to current and prospective future crises in water supply and allocation is something of concern to most people in the community. Mostly we hear from scientists, ecologists, engineers and politicians about water, with much Australian research on water users investigating the attitudes and socio-demographic characteristics of individuals, usually with a view to changing or predicting individual behaviour. But researchers in the humanities and social sciences are contributing to innovative responses - in investigating water use and water-related issues from cultural or sociotechnical perspectives, and/or with strong concerns for the cultural dimensions of water practices, ownership, technologies, uses and values. In the Pipeline will bring together for the first time these dispersed researchers in a unique interdisciplinary gathering.

The program features:

*	Keynote speaker Professor Elizabeth Shove (Lancaster University, UK): The Dynamics and Hydraulics of Everyday Life

*	Plenary speaker Associate Professor Gay Hawkins (UNSW): From the Tap to the Bottle: The Biopolitics and Branding of Bottled Water

*	Plenary Speaker Dr Zoë Wilson (University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa): Debates, Disconnections and Drowning: The Politics of Water Services and Scarcities in Post-Apartheid South Africa

*	Plenary Speaker Dr Sarah Bell (University College, London): The Driest Continent and the Greediest Water Company: Drought in Sydney and London

Other papers explore cultural contestations over water values, uses and governance in urban, rural and international settings; approaches to rethinking of conventional western water habits and expectations and domestic design; relations between water users and infrastructures and much more.

Two-day registration costs are: $90 - students/part-time/unwaged and $200 - academics/full-time/industry (includes lunch and morning and afternoon teas).
