ENGAGEMENTS: A New Issue of Cultural Studies Review

(Vol. 12, No. 2, September 2006)

Edited by Fiona Allon and Meaghan Morris

Community engagement and collaborative partnerships are increasingly
central to research agendas all over the world. This Special Issue of
Cultural Studies Review provides a timely discussion of some challenges
and difficulties raised by this kind of intellectual work. The essays
explore the opportunities that collaborative projects provide for
developing cultural studies as a practice not only involving critique,
but enabling a crucial shift from the study of culture to the politics
of cultures. Focussing on the real complexities faced by "engaged
research", it also provides a fresh examination of current research
trends both in Australia and internationally.

ENGAGEMENTS emerged from an international research exchange between the
Centre for Cultural Research (CCR) at the University of Western Sydney
(UWS) and the Department of Cultural Studies at Lingnan University (LU)
in Hong Kong - two institutions at the forefront of developing cultural
research as a new kind of interdisciplinary, collaborative research
practice that engages with industry and community groups or partners,
and thus involves concrete modes of action and intervention.

* The Canberra launch of the Issue will be held at the Cultural Studies
Association of Australasia UnAustralia Conference at 12:10pm on
Wednesday 6 December 2006.
