The Public Sphere Thesis and Media Sociology
Paul Jones

The public sphere thesis appears to be undergoing another period of
reappraisal and even revival. This has been marked most obviously by
an address on political communication and empirical research
delivered by Habermas two months ago. This paper will situate
Habermas's current position in relation to 'the young Habermas' and
the public sphere thesis's complicated relationship with empirical
research in media sociology. It will also sketch plans Paul Jones
and Michael Pusey have for their ARC research on political
communication in Australia.

Paul Jones is Senior Lecturer in Sociology at UNSW. The paperback
edition of his Raymond Williams's Sociology of Culture: a critical
reconstruction has just been published by Palgrave.
