Volume 4 Number 1: Navigating the Future: Asia-Pacific pathways
The Editorial Committee of the Graduate Journal of Asia-Pacific Studies is
pleased to announce the release of Volume 4 Number 1. For this special issue
contributors have turned their attention towards both the literal and
metaphorical elements of movement. Focusing on the theme ‘Navigating the
Future: Asia-Pacific pathways’, authors have considered the diverse ways in
which historical and contemporary movements of people, technologies, and
ideas have shaped, and continues to shape the practices and experiences of
the Asia-Pacific region and its peoples. Within this focus there is a broad
definition of what might be interpreted as movement: from macro-level
voyages, displacements and migrations to everyday experiences of nations,
cities and neighbourhoods. As a result, the final contributions to this
edition have interpreted the theme in a diverse but insightful manner. They
include discussions of transnational trajectories, the intersection of
mobility, tradition and adaptation, methodological movements, patterns of
migrant participation in the labour force and literary co-operation and
competition.

Call for Papers: Global Convergence / Local Divergence
In this special issue of the Graduate Journal of Asia‐Pacific Studies we
ask contributors to explore these questions of convergence and divergence.
Contributors are encouraged to think about these issues not simply in
relation to the well trodden territory of globalisation but also with
reference to historical and contemporary experiences of (neo)colonialism,
neo‐liberalism, sexism, racism and nationalism. Which experiences and
practices seem to be converging and/or diverging in the contemporary Asia‐
Pacific? In what circumstances do universalising tendencies unintentionally
lead to increased particularity? Or vice versa? Is there a space between the
universal and the particular? Or is this an unbreakable binary?

Email submissions to the Editor, f.collins at auckland.ac.nz, as attachments
saved in RTF or DOC format using a standard word processor. Submissions
should be received by August 30th 2006.

We are also seeking book reviews. For a list of current titles available for
review (these include books on Asian & Pacific cinema, history and politics)
