SBS and the Politics of Language
Ien Ang

This talk will look at the way SBS has put multilingualism into
practice, focusing on the divergent language practices of radio and
television. I describe the cultural impact of radio multilingualism
in terms of the multicultural politics of recognition, while SBS
television's multilingualism articulates a cosmopolitanising politics
of translation. In this way, SBS is represented as a crucial
institution for the articulation of a 'cosmopolitan multiculturalism'.

The seminar will be introduced by Gay Hawkins, who will place the
talk in the context of our ARC Linkage project SBS and Australian
Cultural Democracy: Origins, Uses, Innovation (aka the "SBS Impacts"
project).

Ien Ang is Professor of Cultural Studies and ARC Professorial Fellow
at the Centre for Cultural Research, University of Western Sydney.
