masterclass theme: 'Popular Media and Cultural Citizenship'
what is it? We are seeking applications from postgraduates and early
career researchers who wish to take part in a fantastic opportunity
to learn from one of cultural studies' leading scholars. Each
intensive class will be strictly limited to no more than 12
participants whose work relates to the general theme, 'Popular Media
and Cultural Citizenship'. Participants will be chosen based on a
competitive application process. The masterclasses will follow a
'workshop' format, in which participants will present, discuss and
interrogate their writing and ideas in collaboration with Professor
Miller and others students and early career researchers working in
the field.
how much does it cost? The masterclasses are free of charge to
successful applicants, and include lunch and morning/afternoon teas.
Participants who are travelling from interstate will be eligible for
travel and accommodation subsidies.
how do I apply? Applications are due by 20 April 2006. Applications
must include a completed application form, downloadable from the CRN
website at <http://www.uq.edu.au/crn/projects/masterclass.html> which
asks for: a 400-word thesis abstract or statement of current research
project(s), highlighting specific links with the masterclass theme
and/or Miller's work; a brief CV (no more than 2 pages). Successful
applicants will be notified by 5 May 2006, and will be required to
submit a 3000-word writing sample by 10 May 2006, which will be
forwarded to Professor Miller and the other participants for their
attention prior to the masterclass. Applications and queries should
be submitted via email, to Alison Huber at <huberal at unimelb.edu.au>.
Toby Miller is Professor of English, Sociology and Women's Studies,
and Director of the Program in Film and Visual Culture at the
University of California, Riverside. His writing and research on
film, television, sport, globalisation and cultural citizenship is
extensive: he is the author and editor of over 20 books, and his
numerous essays can be read in more than 30 journals and 50 edited
collections.
