Jonathan ... what can I say? (Thanks for the vote of confidence?)

In fact I had already replied to Liz offlist, but since Jonathan has whetted everyone's appetite here's the spelling-improved abstract/version of my response. My co-Chief Investigator on this project is Robyn Quin and we're currently in final write-up stage of the ARC-funded research (2002--4) into the Internet in Australian family life:

Dear Liz

We've got interview data from teenagers (especially boys) who are routinely engaged in copyright-violating downloads and who use this to circumvent restrictions on 18+ materials (Kill Bill 1 comes to mind) Under this scenario, they become aware of Quentin Tarantino as a 'forbidden' director and set about downloading everything he's ever made off the web. They also 'collect' eg all the South Park episodes, Wombat, Wombat, Family Guy etc. as badges of 'collecting-prowess'. Parents tend to see the quantity of time spent online, rather than the activities pursued online, as the problem. We would also have entrees into affinity groups to extend some of this data if that would be useful?

Best wishes

Lelia

Response re. Liz's querry: other viewing

Dear Liz

I was fortunate enough to hear a v preliminary report of Prof Lelia Green's groundbreaking study into internet use in the Australian family. While at least preliminary research is completed, Im not sure if Lelia has published any of these findings yet, and so I would recommend you contact her directly at Edith Cowan Uni. She is also a subscriber to this list incidently. Even if her findings arent public yet, I would suggest you would be hard pressed to find any one who could reel off the list of practicing researchers in the field quicker for you than Prof Green,

Yours sincerely

Dear colleagues

Are you, or do you know anyone who is, working on research into new
viewing habits. By this I mean viewing audi-visual product other than
by watching a TV screen at home or going to the cinema. I guess that
means internet-based acquisition and viewing of product. The Sydney
Film Festival is organising a forum on the subject and is looking for a
speaker who knows what the punters are actually doing.

Liz
