Yes it's time for more humanities intellectuals to start bugging op-ed 
editors and editors of other relevant sections and to ask senior 
academics for advice on how to get published. The mainstream media may 
be less significant but its not irrelevant yet. And if you are just 
looking for an academic job then shooting those neocon columnists in 
their unbelievably leaky barrels has got to be more fun than making 
money as a research assistant for a work and family juggling academic 
with an ARC Grant.

It's critical that we have new voices out there promoting our field in 
diverse ways. For what its worth, I wrote an 800 word opinion column and 
at least five large feature articles every year in the Sydney Morning 
Herald/Age or Bulletin magazine for a decade. I've  quit most of my 
journalism to concentrate more on longterm academic projects. But it is 
possible to sustain both roles. And I know very well that there is a 
huge demand for intelligent and accessible new voices. Anyone who wants 
advice on getting published or establishing a column should email me in 
late March when I'm back on deck.

In the meantime, I'd like to start a little competition. If Andrew Bolt 
was an elite athlete who would he be? In my household, following a 
column he wrote attacking 'postmodern feminists', there was a suggestion 
that he might be the  Lleyton Hewitt of column writing. Any other ideas?
