Expressions of Interest for an Edited Book of Essays

Preliminary Title: Parading Ourselves: claiming space and identity on the streets

'rent a crowd', 'revolutionaries', 'rioters', 'ignorant fools', 'anti-Australian', 'trouble makers', anti- social'

Papers are invited for a volume on the performance of identity within and through Australian protests, marches, parades and processions.

Crowds of people on the street can be alien, familiar, fun, people like us or those others. Throughout the twentieth century the streets filled with constant tides of different faces of Australia that claimed space in the urban landscape and the social memory. Some that continue to claim a space, some that seem lost in the past, some that are included within social narratives, some that are excluded.

This book focuses on groups of Australians proclaiming their identity collectively on the streets over the last hundred years from a range of disciplinary and theoretical approaches. The essays will explore the performative aspects of the protests, marches, and processions as events that claimed Australian urban landscapes. These performances will be examined in terms of the ways that the participants' intentions, actions and responses intersect and diverge with the attributed social significance and the incorporation of the event into social narratives. Events will include (but are not limited to): ANZAC Day Parades, Mardi Gras, Political Protests such as the Moratoriums, the Tent Embassy, Survival 88 Marches, Reconciliation Marches, S11, Religious Processions, Cultural Events, and Community Celebrations such as Moomba. Essays will be linked thematically according to the events' perceived political, social, or religious significance.

In keeping with the interdisciplinary tenor of this book, articles should be addressed to a non-specialist audience. Essays should be 6,000 words.

Interested contributors should send a Title and Abstract of 500 words to Maryrose Casey or Delyse Ryan by November 30th 2004.
