Monash University is seeking an outstanding appointee to provide 
research and academic leadership in the University's Centre for 
Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies. The position has been made 
available by the resignation of Professor Kevin Hart to take up a chair 
in the United States. The successful candidate will be required to 
engage in a limited amount of undergraduate teaching, but will mainly be

involved in graduate teaching, supervision and research. From time to 
time, the successful candidate may also be required to perform senior 
administrative functions on behalf of the Centre.

The Centre is a large interdisciplinary unit within the Faculty of Arts,

and has a strong reputation for research and teaching. It was set up in 
1974 (as the Centre for General and Comparative Literature) by a group 
of people in the Faculty of Arts interested in pursuing 
interdisciplinary research in the humanities. Since then the Centre has 
been a focus for advanced research in comparative literature, critical 
theory and cultural theory. It now has an international reputation in 
these areas. Undergraduate teaching is in the broad areas of comparative

literature, cultural studies and critical theory.

The appointee will be expected to bring successful research programs 
that will attract external funding and postgraduate students; play a 
leadership role in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching; establish 
and lead research teams; and, if required, act as Director.

The successful applicant will have: a doctoral qualification in an 
appropriate disciplinary area; an international reputation for research 
in his or her discipline; demonstrated success in establishing and 
leading successful research teams and innovative research programs; a 
reading knowledge of French and/or German; a successful record of 
undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision of higher degree

students; and a clear vision for the growth of a centre for leading-edge

research.

Level E (professor) A$106,327 per annum.
Level D (associate professor/reader) $A82,544 to $90,936 per annum.
Superannuation, travel and removal allowances are available.
