Conference Stream: Gender, Disability, Queer Theory and the Law

Gender, Disability and Queerness are broader analytical signifiers that
constitute subjects of marginality, liminality as well as privileged
knowledges. It is possible to speak not just of epistemological or
juridical colonisation but also of colonisation of the subjugated
cosmological imagination in legal encounters. Sites of official
knowledge/unofficial knowledges and practices produce permissible
boundaries of speakability/unspeakability with law’s reasoning. (Legal)
stories help us make sense of the world and the way in which we interpret
the ‘nature’ of things and interpolate ways of difference. This stream is
consciously unbounded in its purview and as such welcomes presentations
that recollect, subvert and (re)generate sites for oppositional story
telling and the foregrounding of subjugated and tacit knowledges within
legal discourses and processes. The stream embraces Bell Hooks’ notion that
the margin can be a site of radical possibility and a space for resistance.
As such, papers that explore points of convergence and dissonance between
gender, disability and queer significations in legal encounters are
especially encouraged.
