Panel Proposal - Everyday Transformations
I am seeking people who may be interested in participating in a panel
on architecture and the everyday for the annual conference of the
Cultural Studies Association of Australasia, Everyday Transformations:
The Twenty-First Century Quotidian in Perth 9-11 December 2004. A panel
usually involves four speakers and papers can be either refereed or
non-refereed. Refereed papers will be published in electronic
conference proceedings.
The general call for the conference poses questions about what is
sought in engaging with the everyday and what remains relevant today in
the study of everyday life. I would like to focus these questions more
closely on to architecture and the built environment. What and how can
our understanding and interpretation of the built environment gain from
an engagement with everyday life and theories of everyday life? In
recent years, theories of everyday life have been embraced by
architectural and urban theorists as an alternative critical
perspective for examining architectural and urban production and
reception. Neglected and overlooked 'ordinary' places and urban forms,
banal materials and everyday social practices and interactions with
urban and suburban environments are beginning to attract critical
curiosity - but to what end? Will this result in an aestheticisation
and commodification of the everyday in architecture? Are there real
social and cultural gains to be made from a re-framing of architecture
within the everyday - and for whom: architects, designers and theorists
or the users of buildings and urban spaces?
Contributions and suggestions are most welcome - my aim for the panel
is simply a fruitful exchange of ideas and research. My contact
details are below.
