chronicles of an exile journey
para//elo event SOON

:: You are asked to remove your shoes and your hands are sprinkled with
rosewater...

This is the beginning of the chronicles of an exile journey, the latest
joint initative between para//elo and the Media Resource Centre, which
aims to unravel the concept of 'home' via a multi-sensory performance at
the Mercury Cinema.

The project delves into issues of belonging, bringing together the wider
community via video interviews with recent refugee arrivals,
performance, installation and sound. The work is based on the notion
that 'homeland' is a negotiable idea. Is homeland increasingly a matter
of political expediency, ideologically motivated and imagined, rather
than intrinsically linked to language or territory? Is globalisation
forcing us to develop new notions of homeland for citizens who do not
'belong'?

Creatives involved include para//elo Creative Director, Teresa Crea, MRC
Director/ Film-maker Peter Thurmer, New media artist Francesco a da
Rimini, Film-maker/ Visual Artist Farhad Noori and Sound Artist Jason
Sweeney, who all experience differing degrees of belonging within
Australia as a result of cultural background.

Only 40 people are admitted per session, adding to the personal nature
of the project, and with ticket prices kept to a minimum, the work is
accessible to all members of the community.
