Hi there

I was wondering if I could place the following ad on the csaa mailing list about an upcoming event my organization (the Center for Research on Social Inclusion, Macquarie University) will be hosting around a visit to Sydney by the transgender activist Dr Susan Stryker from San Francisco. The text is as follows:

DR SUSAN STRYKER - PUBLIC LECTURE AND FILM PRESENTATION "SCREAMING QUEENS: THE MILITANT ORIGINS OF TRANSGENDER ACTIVISM"

Friday June 4th, 6.30pm, The Metcalfe Auditorium, State Library of NSW, Sydney (entry via Macquarie Street)

Dr Susan Stryker is a noted transgender activist, historian and filmmaker based in San Francisco. Dr. Stryker's research, writing and films have focused especially on the histories of transgender and gay and lesbian activism in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her books have included "Queer Pulp: Perverse Passion in the Golden Age of Paperbacks" and (as co-author) "Gay by the Bay: A History of Queer Culture in the San Francisco Bay Area".

The Centre for Research on Social Inclusion and the Department of Critical and Cultural Studies, Macqaurie University, is presenting a public lecture at which Dr Stryker will show an excerpt from her new film about the Compton's Cafeteria riot of 1966 in San Francisco, "Screaming Queens: The Riot at Compton's Café". Dr. Stryker will then speak to the film, addressing it in terms of the histories of transgender militancy in San Francisco's Tenderloin District.

This public lecture is free, although donations will be welcome at the door. Please register to attend with Obelia Modjeska, omodjesk at scmp.mq.edu.au or phone 9850 9171.
