Single mum awarded scholarship

Charles Darwin University student and single mother Susan Hosking, 28, of
Darwin, last night was awarded the $3000 Barbara Singer Environmental
Scholarship to further her studies.

The scholarship was one of nine - with a total value of $58,500 - presented
last night at a ceremony hosted by Charles Darwin University Vice
Chancellor Professor Helen Garnett.

Ms Hosking, who successfully completed her Bachelor of Science degree last
year, is studying for a Bachelor of Science Honours degree.

Her honours project involves investigating the densities of magpie goose
nests across the Top End, using aerial photographs and cutting-edge digital
image analysis techniques.

A delighted Ms Hosking took her daughter, Alicia, 3, along to the ceremony
last night. Ms Hosking said: "I am honoured to receive this award and it
will certainly help ease the financial burden.

"I hope to use the knowledge gained from my studies in an
environment-related area of the workforce."

Ms Hosking has spent the past two end-of-year breaks undertaking research
projects. The first was a study of the effect of biological control on the
water weed Salvinia molesta, and the second investigated the effect of fire
on water quality in the Darwin River Dam catchment.

She is the first recipient of the Barbara Singer Scholarship, set up by the
Charles Darwin University and the Northern Territory Office of Environment
and Heritage to honor Ms Singer's contributions to environmental protection
in the Territory.

Ms Singer has been the principal government adviser on Territory
environmental matters for the past 31 years. The scholarship continues Ms
Singer's legacy of nurturing young talent and encouraging young
Territorians to make a career in protecting our unique environment.

Ms Lyn Allen, executive director of the Office of Environment and Heritage,
presented the scholarship last night.

Professor Garnett said: "I wish to thank the many sponsors of tonight's
event. It is a wonderful sign of the confidence the business community has
in Charles Darwin University and our young people that they are prepared to
invest so much in our students' future.

"These scholarships give valuable support to many fine young students and
assist them to further their studies. It is a very important element of
university life these days, particularly when so many students here are of
mature age and trying to combine their studies with a career or, as in
Susan Hosking's case, without employment."

Other scholarships presented last night were:

· $1000 Chief Minister's Award for Science to Rachel Meldrum, presented
by the Chief Minister, the Hon Clare Martin;
· $20,000 Power and Water Engineering Scholarships to Daly Kelly and

·     $5000 International All Sports IT Scholarship to Michael Pascoe;
·     $2500 Minter Ellison Rising Star Scholarship to Nicholas Yarran;

Professor Garnett said a tenth scholarship - the $5000 Qantec McWilliam
Scholarship for civil engineering - would be awarded in the next few weeks.
