Students plastered in model idea

Sculpture classes have returned to Charles Darwin University and are
proving a popular choice with students.

The School of Creative Arts and Humanities is offering sculpture as an
elective subject in the Bachelor of Visual Arts degree.

Students from any discipline can enrol and can work with such materials as
wood, clay, paper, wax, plaster, hebel and even latex.

"Students are experimenting with and learning about a wide variety of
materials, processes and techniques," sculpture lecturer Ms Anne Ooms said
today.

"We have had a wonderful and enthusiastic response from the students
studying sculpture and have received many requests for the sculpture
classes to continue."

Fine Arts students Philip Denson, 22 and Evan Dixon, 19, are just two of 12
students in the sculpture class this semester. As part of their studies
they have created a plaster of paris sculpture of the human torso.

"The plaster felt cold on, but rather soothing," said Philip, on whose body
the torso sculpture was modelled.

The sculpture class will be exhibiting their work over the next few days in
an exhibition titled, 'Simply Objects'. The display, which is open to the
public, will be in the Upstairs Gallery of the Visual Arts building
(building 14), on the Casuarina campus.

It opens today at 4.30pm and will be open tomorrow (Friday) and Monday from
8.30am to 5.30pm.

Most Higher Education courses at Charles Darwin University are open for
mid-year enrolments. All VET courses are open for continuous enrolment.
Students seeking further enrolment details should contact the
   University's hotline on 1800 061 963, or email courses at cdu.edu.au.
