Popular Proms on Saturday
Darwin Symphony Orchestra's Nita McAuley has many strings to her bow:
violinist, portrait artist and equestrian champion.
Her paintings hang in galleries and private collections across Australia,
in Japan, the US and Europe.
Her work also features on the cover for the DSO's second concert program
for 2005, Last Night of the Proms, at the Darwin Entertainment Centre on
Saturday, May 7.
The original watercolour, featuring the Royal Albert Hall, London, home of
the world famous Promenade Concerts, will be auctioned on concert night.
Nita is an exhibiting member of the Royal Art Society of New South Wales,
Territory Craft Darwin and the Darwin Visual Arts Association and won a
commendation in last year's Portrait of a Senior Territorian Art Award.
She studied at Julian Ashton's Art College in Sydney. Subsequently she and
husband John owned a thoroughbred stud so a passion for painting horses
came naturally.
Nita became Australian Grand Prix Dressage Champion and also trained in the
teams for the Munich and Montreal Olympic Games in 1974 and 1978. Her
favourite horse, Equardo, happily performed to selections from Strauss
waltzes.
DSO Artistic Director Martin Jarvis said a few seats remain for Saturday's
concert.
"A ticket would be an ideal Mother's Day gift as an evening at The Proms
guarantees an excellent night out for Mum. Dress code for the real
enthusiasts ranges from tiaras to bowlers, crinolines to Union Jack silk
boxers.
"These concerts were founded in 1895 and have become a great favourite with
audiences over the past 110 years. Almost always a sellout, they present a
mix of the serious and the familiar, of symphony and rousing song."
Tickets are $30 (discounts for seniors) from the DEC Box Office, 8980 3333,
and any that remain can be purchased from 7pm on concert night.
