Classical guitar in the Gardens
Guitar in the Gardens will be the theme for the second in Darwin Symphony
Orchestra's Symphony in the Gardens 2005 series next month.
The concert will also be the finale for the sixth Darwin International
Guitar Festival, which runs from July 6 to July 16.
DSO Artistic Director Martin Jarvis announced the evening would have a
Spanish flavour, with the orchestra matching the exuberance of Carmen with
an emphasis on music for guitars. Poems will also inspire powerful imagery
within modern compositions.
"The evening includes Rodrigo's well-loved compositions for guitar. There
are new works by American Allen Krantz and Australian composer Nigel
Butterley and the world premiere of a specially commissioned concerto by
David Harris. The finale (with a few fireworks) is Rimsky-Korsakov's
virtuosic piece for orchestra - Capriccio Espagnol.
"The soloists for this performance include Jason Vieaux, Head of the
Cleveland Institute of Music Conservatory in the United States and Richard
Charlton who makes a welcome return to Darwin. Richard was one of the
founding members of the Sydney Guitar Quartet and also a former member of
the Bennelong Players based at Sydney Opera House.
"The outstanding guitarist Karin Schaupp interprets Rodrigo's Concierto de
Aranjuez. Karin recently performed this piece with the Philharmonic at
London's Royal Festival Hall. Her albums include Dreams, ABC Classic FM's
'CD of the week' in August 2004."
Serious lovers of music will be spoilt at this wonderful outdoor event at
Gardens Amphitheatre on Saturday July 16. BYO eskies, rugs, picnics. Gates
open 5.30pm. Concert starts at 6.30pm.
