Army details tsunami relief work
Army engineering work in Aceh in the aftermath of the Boxing Day tsunami
and a solar power project for Indigenous communities are among the
highlights of the Engineering Excellence Awards for 2005.
Engineers from around the Territory will converge on Charles Darwin
University tonight (Tuesday) to give technical presentations about these
and other major engineering projects.
Charles Darwin University Associate Professor Friso de Boer said the
university had a strong association with Engineers Australia. "Our degree
is accredited with Engineers Australia and we have close associations with
many employers. Events such as this strengthen the links between students
and employers. Many of the latter provide scholarships to assist some of
our students in their studies."
Engineers Australia Northern Division director Bronwyn Russell said:
"Charles Darwin University works collaboratively with Engineers Australia
to encourage interest in engineering and supporting existing members. The
Excellence Awards are about celebrating engineering excellence and this
year is also the Year of the Young Engineer."
Ms Russell said entries comprised:
· Bootu Creek Mine access road, 40km north of Renner Springs;
· Nhulunbuy Airport new runway and terminal building;
· Operation Sumatra Assist (Army engineers reacting quickly to the
Boxing Day Tsunami);
· RAAF Base Tindal security fence;
· Redevelopment of Power and Water Ben Hammond Complex in Stuart Park;
· Solar systems remote Indigenous community power stations project
The technical presentation of entries will be held at the CDU Casuarina
campus, Business Auditorium (Building 22) at 5.30pm today (June 21).
Award winners will be announced at a Gala dinner at Parliament House on 12
August.
