Decorative trades craft on show at
Charles Darwin Alice Springs

Decorative metal and wood craft goes on display this week at Charles Darwin
University in Alice Springs.

The exhibition in the university's construction room highlights student
work from the woodwork and decorative metalwork classes.

Lecturer in Decorative Metalwork, Pat Organ said today: "These pieces are
not purely art or craft and not just construction work but are the result
of the creative use of wood and metal crafts."

Examples include outdoor table settings incorporating decorative metal legs
with wooden tops, beds, table and chair settings, candelabras, fire tools,
dolls houses, blanket boxes, tucker boxes, TV units and chessboards.

"These pieces highlight the skills involved such as forging, twisting,
scrolling and wood-turning," Mr Organ said. "We are providing students with
the opportunity to combine the two classes on the one project so they are
not limited to just the one medium of metal or wood.

"The classes developed after a student in welding wanted to build a forge.
Interest in the project grew and from there the class filled quickly,
incorporating skills and techniques from both areas, as demand warranted.
We now find that around a third of our classes are repeats, people keen to
use our excellent facilities and extend their projects."

The exhibition is open to the public from 6pm-9pm on Thursday 23 June, and
includes work from VET in Schools students. Guided tours of the facilities
will also be conducted with nibbles and refreshments available.

"This exhibition is for anyone interested in attending night classes on
Tuesdays and Thursdays. Classes run for one semester of 17 weeks and are
very popular so people need to come and see us," Mr Organ said.
