Ideal book for medical students
A new book aimed at medical students and doctors preparing for their
general practice examinations will be launched in Alice Springs on Monday.
The author is GP Educator Dr Susan Wearne of the Centre for Remote Health,
a joint Centre of Flinders University and Charles Darwin University.
The book, Clinical Cases for General Practice, is the first of its kind
published in Australia.
"This is the book that I looked for when I moved to Australia. This book
is the teaching material that I have developed, used and refined over the
last four years with GP registrars and international medical graduates," Dr
Wearne said today.
The book has already won wide praise from eminent academics and GPs.
Associate Professor John Wakerman, Director of the Centre for Remote
Health, said: "Dr Wearne has used her rich experience in Central Australia
to write a book of case studies rooted in the reality of practice in remote
Australia, but applicable to the whole country."
Professor Michael Kidd, President of the Royal Australian College of
General Practitioners, said: "Dr Susan Wearne has made a valuable
contribution to Australian medical education. I am certain this book will
find a place in the education and training of Australia's future general
practitioners."
Dr Wearne joined the Centre for Remote Health in Alice Springs as GP
Educator in 2000. She also works at Central Australian Aboriginal Congress
and in private practice at Bath Street Family Medical Centre. As well as
her teaching and research duties at the Centre for Remote Health, she is
Chair of the Central Australian Division of Primary Health Care and runs GP
supervisor development for the Remote Vocational Training Scheme.
Susan's husband, Tim Henderson, is Ophthalmologist at Alice Springs
Hospital. Together and individually, they have made a substantial
contribution to medical services in the region.
The book will be launched at the Centre for Remote Health, cr Simpson and
Skinner Sts, Alice Springs, on Monday, 20 June 2005 at 12.30pm
