Tangentyere begin IT Pathway with CDU
Participants in Tangentyere Council's training and employment program are
benefiting from an Information Technology course at Charles Darwin
University in Alice Springs.
Coral Cox, CDEP Training and Employment Coordinator for Tangentyere, said
today Pathways Through Information Technology will allow CDEP participants
and staff to upskill in basic computer literacy.
"It's a course that we hope will be a stepping-stone to more skilled
employment and further study for our participants," she said.
Pathways Through Information Technology has been developed as a supported
program to suit individuals who have little or no computer experience.
Trina McEwin, Charles Darwin University Information Technology lecturer,
said the course assumes no prior knowledge.
"We are really happy to be delivering the Pathways course to Tangentyere
and other Indigenous people. I am serious about bringing people's levels
of understanding and skill base in computing up to workplace standard.
"This course is not only for job seekers; it is also for people seeking to
use computers for personal reasons. It is for anyone who wishes to learn
about computers."
Other local organisations taking advantage of this program include
Tangentyere Jobshop, U3A, Centacare, Centrelink, CRS, CASA and general
community members.
Participants attend over a two to three week period for a total of 30
hours. Organisations with group bookings can negotiate session times.
Topics in the program include Windows XP, basic Internet, email, and basic
word processing skills.
The program is free upon presentation of a health care card or proof of
receipt of pension. For those not receiving a pension the cost is $93.50
and includes all materials.
Classes are offered on a regular basis. Other IT courses are also available
in Second Semester.
