Taste of Uni in Alice Springs
About 40 Indigenous Year 10 students will visit the Alice Springs campus of
Charles Darwin University on Thursday for a 'Taste of Uni'.
Alice Springs Campus Leader Lyle Mellors said today: "Similar programs have
been held in Darwin, but this is the first time we have extended this to
Year 10 students in Alice Springs. The idea is to give students an idea of
what we have to offer before they make their decisions on their Year 11 and
Year 12 courses.
"Students will be accompanied by teachers and given an outline of courses,
career paths and support available. We offer a wide variety of options and
pathways in both Higher Education and Vocational Education and Training.
"Students will be given information in a range of discipline areas
including Law, Business, Accounting, Indigenous Studies and Resource
Management; Education, Conservation, Trades, Information Technology,
Nursing, Arts and Music."
Mr Mellors said the major goal of the day would be to map out the possible
"pathways" to a career from compulsory schooling through post-schooling
choices of vocational or tertiary education.
The objectives of the day are to:
· Deliver a short program to introduce university as a next step after
high school, including Higher Education and VET opportunities;
· Provide information about a range of course options and the Year 11
and 12 subjects needed to enter specific discipline areas;
· Explain different pathways into specific programs;
· Highlight academic and other support available at CDU;
· Take part in a project that will provide a smooth transition to the
enrolment into their selected career program in higher education, the
trades, or VET.
Students and staff will be attending from Anzac Hill High School, Alice
Springs High School, Our Lady of Sacred Heart and St Philip's College.
Mr Mellors said he particularly wished to thank Indigenous Academic Support
Lecturer Lorraine St Clair and Pathways Coordinator Karrina Betschart for
organising the day.
