NTU students rising to the occasion
Two Northern Territory University bakery students are in Melbourne this
week competing in the Australian National Team Bake Skills Competition
2002.
Michael Cronin and Chris Koller will represent the NT in what is the
first time the Territory has entered the competition, a competition that
has attracted Australias best apprentice bakers for 10 years.
The competition is part of the nationally popular Fine Foods Expo in
Melbourne, which is expected to draw more than 30 thousand people
through its doors this year.
The two young bakers will compete for three days at the event. The first
day will see them baking bread, the second day they will test their cake
and pastry baking skills, while the third day will involve decorating
the cakes and pastries created the day before.
Following the competition, the apprentice bakers will man a stall at the
Expo, with each pair of competitors from each state and Territory,
developing their own themes for the stalls.
The NT theme reflects the Territory and a theme appropriate for 2002,
The Year of the Outback. Breads such a dampers will be on display and
breads featuring bush ingredients including bush tomatoes and the like
will be highlighted.
Chris and Michael said they were both looking forward to the event and
saw it as an opportunity to learn more about the Australian baking
industry while experiencing methods of baking.
NTU Lecturer and coordinator of baking programs, Nevon Sachse, said
Michael and Chris were just two of 50 plus apprentice bakers the
University was training. He said these two bakers were chosen to
participate in the competition because of their dedication to their
trade and their ambition.
